What is a Cone Crusher?

In the world of mining, aggregate production, and mineral processing, the cone crusher stands as one of the most essential and widely used crushing machines. A cone crusher is a type of heavy-duty crushing equipment widely used in the mining, aggregate, and construction industries. It is designed to crush hard and medium-hard materials such as granite, basalt, limestone, and iron ore into smaller, uniform sizes.

Cone crushers are essential in secondary and tertiary crushing stages, providing high efficiency, excellent particle shape, and stable performance.

Working Principle Diagram

Working Principle of a Cone Crusher

A cone crusher is a compression-type machine, with its conical structure, where the crushing head rotates inside a fixed outer shell. that reduces material size by squeezing or compressing the feed material between a moving piece of steel (mantle) and a stationary piece (concave or bowl liner).

As the material enters the top of the crusher, it gradually falls into the crushing chamber, where it is crushed into smaller and smaller pieces until it passes through the bottom opening.

The working principle of a cone crusher is based on compression and crushing inside a chamber.

Step-by-step process

1
Material Feed
Material enters the crusher from the top through a feed hopper. The feed is evenly distributed around the circumference of the crushing chamber.
2
Gyratory Motion
An eccentric assembly rotates the main shaft, causing the mantle to gyrate — that is, to move in a circular, oscillating path. The mantle moves closer to and farther away from the bowl liner with each rotation.
3
Crushing Action
As the mantle approaches the bowl liner, the material trapped between them is crushed by compression. When the mantle moves away, the crushed material falls downward by gravity. This continuous cycle allows material to move progressively downward through the chamber, being crushed multiple times.
4
Size Reduction
The size of the final product is determined by the closed side setting (CSS) — the smallest gap between the mantle and bowl liner at the bottom of the chamber. A narrower CSS produces finer material; a wider CSS yields coarser output.
5
Discharge
Once the material reaches a size smaller than the CSS, it exits through the bottom opening of the crusher and is collected on a conveyor belt for further processing or screening.

Types of Cone Crushers

Multi-Cylinder Hydraulic Cone Crusher

Higher crushing force, excellent for hard rock and fine crushing applications.

Spring Cone Crusher

Traditional design using springs for tramp iron relief. Suitable for medium to hard materials.

Single Cylinder Hydraulic Cone Crusher

Simple structure, easy maintenance, ideal for medium crushing.

Compound Cone Crusher

Modern design with hydraulic adjustment and overload protection. Offers higher automation and safety.

PSG Cone Crusher

A widely recognized standard in the industry, known for its robust construction and reliable performance.

Comparison of Single-Cylinder vs. Multi-Cylinder Cone Crushers

From the perspective of machine structure, single-cylinder and multi-cylinder cone crushers differ as follows

1. The single-cylinder cone crusher features a larger bottom cone angle and a relatively steeper crushing chamber profile, allowing for smoother material flow. In contrast, the multi-cylinder cone crusher has a smaller bottom cone angle. Due to its adoption of a fixed-shaft structure—which differs significantly from the integral shaft design of the single-cylinder model—it can operate at higher rotational speeds to achieve a high-energy, laminated crushing effect. Consequently, material undergoes a greater number of crushing cycles within the chamber. Therefore, for two machines of equivalent specifications, the throughput of the single-cylinder cone crusher is slightly higher than that of the multi-cylinder model; however, the multi-cylinder cone crusher produces a higher percentage of fine-grained material, yields a more uniform product, and generates a superior product shape (more cubic) compared to the single-cylinder crusher.

2. Both single-cylinder and multi-cylinder cone crushers allow for hydraulic adjustment of the discharge opening size.

The multi-cylinder cone crusher adjusts the opening by utilizing a hydraulic motor to rotate a large gear, thereby raising or lowering the stationary cone liner. The single-cylinder cone crusher adjusts the opening by injecting oil into—or draining oil from—the bottom hydraulic cylinder to raise or lower the movable cone liner. In practical operation, the discharge opening size of the single-cylinder cone crusher tends to fluctuate; its stability is inferior to that of the multi-cylinder cone crusher, which can negatively impact the uniformity of the discharge particle size.

3. Regarding ease of maintenance—specifically when replacing liners—the single-cylinder cone crusher requires the removal of the fixing bolts connecting the upper and lower frames, followed by the separation of the frames to facilitate the replacement. The multi-cylinder cone crusher, however, allows for liner replacement simply by using the hydraulic motor to rotate and directly unscrew the adjustment ring.

Price Operating Cost Output Crushing Size Crushed Shape Installation Site
DP Hydraulic Cone Crusher Higher Slightly higher operating costs; requires a certain level of maintenance expertise Steep crushing chamber; high throughput Superior product shape; fewer flaky and needle-like particles Building Materials, Chemicals, Energy, Mineral Processing
HP Cone Crusher Higher Slightly higher operating costs; requires a certain level of maintenance expertise High throughput Produces a high proportion of fine-grained particles Good product shape; fewer flaky and needle-like particles Building Materials, Mineral Processing; "More Crushing, Less Grinding" applications

Differences Between PSG Series Compound Cone Crusher and Spring Cone Crushers

Both of these cone crushing devices are utilized for the medium and fine crushing of materials; the differences between the two are outlined below:

The PSG Series Compound Cone Crusher (also known as the Compound Cone Crusher) is a next-generation product that represents an improvement and upgrade over the PY series spring cone crusher. Both models utilize springs as an overload protection mechanism; however, the Symons crusher features optimizations across multiple aspects, resulting in significant enhancements in both performance and operational convenience.

Differences in Working Principles
The fundamental crushing principles of the two machines are essentially identical: an eccentric mechanism drives the movable cone to perform a gyratory motion, thereby subjecting the material within the crushing chamber to compression and fracture.

Differences in Core Structural Design
Symons Cone Crusher: The eccentric sleeve is manufactured using a one-piece forging process, ensuring high-precision fitting with the main shaft and resulting in a uniform oscillation amplitude for the moving cone.

The frame features a split design, facilitating the inspection and replacement of internal components; consequently, its structural stability is superior to that of the spring cone crusher.

Spring Cone Crusher: A set of springs is distributed around the periphery of the frame. When encountering hard, uncrushable objects—such as iron blocks—the springs compress, allowing the moving cone to lower and discharge the hard object, thereby achieving overload protection and automatic resetting.

The core distinction lies in the following:
PSG Series Compound Cone Crusher: Features an optimized design for the main shaft and eccentric bushing assembly. By combining a high gyratory frequency with an appropriately calibrated stroke, it is capable of performing a greater amount of work compared to a spring crusher with a movable cone of the same diameter.Spring Cone Crusher: Employs a cantilever-beam structure for its main shaft; this design results in less favorable stress distribution, leading to an overall machine design that is relatively bulky.

Price Operating Cost Output Crushing Size Crushed Shape Installation Site
PY Spring Cone Crusher Lowest Low operating costs; requires minimal maintenance expertise. Poor product shape; high proportion of needle-like and flaky particles. Building Materials, Chemicals, Energy
PSG Series Compound Cone Crusher Moderate Low operating costs; requires slightly higher maintenance expertise. Good product shape; fewer needle-like and flaky particles. Building Materials, Chemicals, Energy, Mineral Processing.
